A Gentler Shake Up
Need to shift out of a rut? Or solve a sticky situation?
Here’s a new twist.
Instead of focusing on the “problem area,” place your attention on the “norms” in your day-to-day. The usual. The boring. The patterns.
Maybe it’s the route for your dog walk, your commute, your path to the bath.
Maybe it’s what you listen to during your workout.
Maybe it’s how you answer the phone.
Maybe it’s what you always wear with those pants.
Maybe it’s the sequence of your nighttime ritual.
Pick anything.
Approach your chosen pattern like a curious scientist.
Formulate a 3-day experiment to interrupt the patterned behavior.
Modify the behavior In a different way each day.
For example…
Day 1- Walk backwards to the bathroom. Day 2- Touch the window in the bedroom before arriving to the bathroom. Day 3- Slide and glide to the bathroom.
Interrupting a pattern seemingly unrelated to what you’re dealing with can act as a lubricant of sorts.
Shaking up the norms can reduce friction so that everything in life can slide and glide into a new groove a little easier.
It also strengthens the mental muscles you’ll need to interrupt those patterns you want to modify, like sleeping through the morning workout or constantly checking your phone.
It’s a gentle baby step to break free from stagnancy without putting all the pressure on “the thing.” And it’s way more fun. Can’t hurt, right?
You can bring this into your body, too. It’s simple. SHAKE IT UP.
Set a timer for 30 seconds. Pick a body part. And get shakin.
